Monica’s Abdominal Hysterectomy

Abdominal Hysterectomy
Age at Surgery 33
Location: Long Island, NY

Here we go… I am 33 years old (34 next week!) and 3 months post op from an emergency TAH. This was something that was not planned for at all… It happened after a myomectomy to remove a fibroid on my cervix went severely wrong leading to emergency hysterectomy and bladder repair to fix 2 punctures into my bladder. The possibility of a hysterectomy was never explained to me as a potential risk of the Myomectomy, heck they told me I’d need to have the fibroid removed in order to ever be able to get pregnant again. No time to have a second opinion , I was rushed back into surgery because I was hemorrhaging severely. This was the outcome.

Surgery was traumatic. The whole experience was extremely traumatic. We aren’t even sure at this point why I needed a hysterectomy because all of the medical records and surgical transcripts only report that the bleeding was coming from the bladder tears, nothing about the uterus. I was in the hospital for 4 days.

Recovery was a really really hard. I left the hospital with a catheter for three weeks because of the bladder tears, and was having bladder spasms the entire time on top of the pain from the hysterectomy. Once the catheter was removed I started to feel better But had a uti that took forever to go away. I was exhausted both physically and emotionally for a long time, I still am.

Needless to say my greatest challenge has been accepting that this happened to me. I am 33 and thankfully I have three kids but I was not ready to make a decision as to whether I was done having kids. On top of it all, all reports have been leading to the idea that this was a mistake, and unnecessary. My doctor even said to me that my mistake was made and he does not know how the bladder tears occurred.

Three months later, I am now back to regular activities but beginning pelvic floor physical therapy for back pain, scar tissue and remaining bladder issues. I am NOT happy about my hysterectomy and would not wish it on anyone my age.

Good luck. No advice really from me at this time.
